Energy Club, the leading business community of energy companies in Ukraine, successfully organized the Gas Storage Forum, an important event for the energy community, on March 16th, 2023. The forum brought together infrastructure companies, independent experts, and gas trading companies. The meeting featured two panels that provided valuable insights into the changing European gas paradigm and gas flows in the region, and the importance of Ukrainian gas storages for European energy security.

The Ukrainian Energy Exchange and Transition Technologies partnered for the forum. The forum was moderated by Andriy Kulykov, journalist, TV and radio host, media expert.

The Forum began with introductory speeches from Lisse Geert van Vliet, Vice President of Energy Club, and Mykola Kolisnyk, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine. Both stressed the need for European countries to collaborate for reliable and secure energy supplies, particularly given recent geopolitical tensions.

The first panel, "Changing European Gas Paradigm and Ukraine’s Strategic Importance," featured Dr. Ralf Wagner, Lead Market Analysis at Uniper, Roman Maliutin, Acting General Director of Ukrtransgaz, Pawel Stanczak, Acting General Director of Gas TSO of Ukraine, Gregor Weinzettel, Gas Expert & Deputy Lead Ukraine Support Task Force at Energy Community Secretariat, and Aleksander Vigne, Policy Officer at DG ENER, Energy Platform Task Force at the European Commission. The panelists discussed the challenges and opportunities presented by the EU energy platform for joint gas procurement and the potential for Ukraine's underground gas storage system to become a key hub for gas storage and delivery to Europe. The experts also discussed the importance of diversifying gas import/export routes and the potential of integrating Ukraine and its neighboring south-east European natural gas markets.

The second panel, "Importance of Ukrainian Gas Storages for European Energy Security," featured Aura Sabadus, Senior energy journalist at ICIS, Serhii Pereloma, Acting General Director of Ukrtransgaz (August 2020 - January 2023), Sotirios Bravos, Commercial Services Division Director at DESFA, Willem Coppoolse, Head of Trading at ERU, Filip Bozic, Independent Energy Expert, and Ewa Chachuła, Product Development Team Manager - Gas Sector at Transition Technologies. The panelists discussed the crucial role of Ukrainian gas storages in ensuring European energy security and explored the opportunities and challenges of integrating Ukraine and its neighboring south-east European natural gas markets in a post-Russian gas scenario.

Overall, the Gas Storage Forum served as a valuable platform for policymakers, energy experts, and industry leaders to discuss and explore solutions to European energy sector challenges.
"We are pleased to be hosting this important forum at a time when the European energy crisis remains an urgent challenge for the community," said Lisse Geert van Vliet, Vice President of Energy Club. "The Gas Storage Forum provides an opportunity for stakeholders in the energy market to come together and discuss how we can work together to address the challenges we face."
Andriy Kostrytsia, President of Energy Club, emphasized, "To ensure Europe's energy security, coordinated action is crucial. Together, we can succeed by strengthening Ukraine as a strategic partner in the European energy sector and addressing growing geopolitical challenges."
